When products cannot withstand the high temperature or high humidity conditions of steam sterilization, chemical sterilization using Ethylene Oxide gas is one of the  few options available. This small molecule gas penetrates common plastic and paper materials and therefore allows terminal sterilization in final packaging. In fact the packaging cartons may even be palletised.
